Putting the Muscle back into Classic Cars

Modifying the handling in the CJ Chrysler

May 20, 2024

The CJ Chrysler by Chrysler was built with comfort in mind and as a result can feel quite “boaty” when driving down the road.  We upgraded all of this with our handling package.

The front end was strengthened with Control arm braces, a heavy duty sway bar was put in place, all the moveable components were replaced with Urethane and chassis rail connectors were custom made and fitted.

While the front end was out of the car it was blasted and powder-coated and all the bolts were zinc-plated.  Making it look like the Chrysler was new and handle like a modern car.

An inherent fault with the Chrysler Valiants in right Hand Drive cars is that the tunnel is still offset to the right, i.e. the floor pan is the same as their Left Hand Drive counterparts.  This leaves very little room for the large Chrysler Power Steering boxes if you wish to run Headers.  The original boxes need to be nestled in the headers and this causes them to overheat and continuously blow seals.

We repaired this issue by fitting a smaller new modern Valiant Power Steering box which also eliminated that ultra light steering at speed as the new boxes have variable pressure allowing them to steer like a modern car.
